What is the install process?

Estimate & Consultation: A specialist assesses your power needs and recommends the best generator for your home and budget.
Pre-Installation & Permitting: We secure permits, verify code compliance, and acquire all necessary materials and accessories.
Professional Generator Installation (1–2 days): Our team installs the generator, gas piping, and automatic transfer switch, levels the site, and secures the unit. A mechanical inspector reviews the gas line before the final connection. Installation concludes with a system walkthrough and power outage simulation.
Post-Installation & Warranty: We finalize all required electrical and gas inspections and register your generator warranty with the manufacturer (Generac or Kohler).
Ongoing Maintenance: We contact you one year post-installation to schedule your first annual maintenance service.

What’s included in the cost of installation?

Washington Generators offers turn key generator installation services for both Generac and Kohler. You can expect all aspects of your generator installation to be handled from beginning to end including gas piping, permits and inspections, along with any other required work for your project.

Approximately 4 weeks, depending on where you live for permitting

Where am I allowed to put my generator?

Generators should be placed at least 3 feet away from any doors, windows, vents, or other openings. Keep in mind that local city or jurisdictional setback laws may also dictate placement, particularly if the generator will be near a property line. Our estimates always include determining the optimal location for your generator, taking into account both local jurisdiction requirements and current electrical codes.

How many kW do I need for my home standby generator?

The size of the generator you need depends on your home’s size and what appliances you want to power during an outage. Generally, a 22kW generator is the most common choice for whole-home coverage, while a 14kW generator is often sufficient for partial home coverage.

How loud is a home standby generator when in operation?

When should the generator be doing its weekly exercise?

Each generator is set at the time of install for the time and date requested by the customer. I should self-test once every week, if it is not testing check the color of the light on the side of the generator or open the lid and see if there are any error codes on the controller Screen. If you would like it changed, we can change it during your next maintenance visit

Can I integrate Solar or battery back ups with my generator?

Absolutely! Many homeowners are now combining solar panels, battery storage (like Tesla Powerwall), and standby generators to create a more resilient and efficient backup power system. Our team is extremely knowledgeable with hybrid systems, especially transfer switch compatibility, load prioritization, and system communication between inverter, battery, and generator

How often should the generator be serviced?

Once a year the unit requires a full tune up – replacement of oil & filter, air filter, spark plugs, adjusting the valves, checking the battery along with a 25 point checklist

What do I do if there is a multiple day outage and the generator runs for longer periods of time?

When a generator is running during a long-term outage, it is vital to shut it down after every 24
hours of consecutive run time for 1 hour. This allows the generator to cool down, and provides owners an opportunity to do a brief visual inspection of the unit and add oil if necessary.
